Chicopee Police Confronted by Armed Man While Conducting a Well-being Check

May 22, 2019 -Chicopee- On Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at approximately 1:00 a.m. members of the Chicopee Police Department responded to 830 Chicopee Street after receiving a request to conduct a well-being check. The caller stated he was receiving disturbing messages from a co-worker, who lives in Chicopee, and believed his colleague to be suicidal.

Members of the Chicopee Police Department responded and made contact with the individual of concern. Officers encountered the individual in the doorway hallway of his unit in the apartment building. He was standing in his doorway holding a large kitchen knife in a threatening manner at the responding officers.

After refusing to drop the knife, one officer deployed a taser which failed to subdue the individual. At this point the second officer discharged his firearm twice striking the individual in the abdomen and arm.

The responding officers performed first aid until emergency medical services arrived.

The individual has been identified as Mr. Dauda Handan, 55, of Chicopee.

Responding EMS personnel reported that Mr. Handan stated that he wanted to die as live saving measures were occurring. He was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he is being treated and is expected to recover.

Mr. Handan has been placed under arrest by the Chicopee Police Department and charged with two counts of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.  

This is an active investigation currently being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.
