December 9, 2025 – Springfield, Massachusetts – Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni announced that Carlos Maldonado, 37, of Springfield, has been ordered held without the right to bail following a dangerousness hearing held in Holyoke District Court on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025.

A District Court judge ordered that Maldonado be held without right to bail pursuant to Massachusetts General Law 276 Section 58A as a danger.

On Nov. 5, 2025, the Holyoke Police received a “be on the lookout,” or BOLO, for Maldonado and the vehicle he was driving after the theft of a firearm in Springfield.

Holyoke Police observed the vehicle, and a motor vehicle stop was conducted at the Holyoke/West Springfield line. As police approached, Maldonado reversed the vehicle and struck a Holyoke Police cruiser. He then accelerated forward, driving down Route 5 at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour.

Maldonado was weaving in and out of traffic, driving on the Interstate 91 ramp before returning to Rt. 5 and continuing to drive south before crossing into the Northbound side of Rt. 5, traveling the wrong way into oncoming traffic, where he struck another vehicle head on, significantly injuring the driver.

Maldonado then got out of his car and attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended by the police.

The stolen firearm was located in the vehicle the defendant had been driving.

Maldonado faces charges in Holyoke District Court and Springfield District Court related to this incident.

Maldonado was in warrant status at the time for a Drug Trafficking case out of Holyoke and a Violation of Probation Warrant out of Hampden Superior Court.

Maldonado is due back in court on Jan. 5, 2026.

The victim involved in the crash remains hospitalized.
