Hampden County Gun Buyback Set for May 17
May 8, 2025 – West Springfield, Massachusetts – The Hampden District Attorney’s Office and Baystate Health are encouraging Western Massachusetts residents to safely dispose of unwanted firearms and ammunition through their annual gun buyback event on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the West Springfield Town Hall, 26 Central St. from 8:30-10 a.m. The initiative is part of the office’s broader strategy to prevent gun-related violence, injuries, and suicides across Hampden County. All firearms will be accepted anonymously, with no questions asked.
The buyback is open to residents who possess firearms they no longer wish to keep – whether due to safety concerns, inherited weapons, or a desire to reduce the risk of accidents or misuse in the home. Ammunition will also be accepted.
“Gun violence affects every corner of our community, from accidental shootings to suicides and homicides. By offering a safe and anonymous way for residents to dispose of firearms, we are taking one small but meaningful step toward protecting our families and neighborhoods,” Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said. “Every gun turned in is one less that could fall into the wrong hands.”
According to the Massachusetts Medical Society, 255 people die and 688 are wounded from firearm-related injuries in the Commonwealth in the average year. While Massachusetts has one of the lowest gun death rates in the country, gun suicides account for over 56% of those deaths. National data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that access to firearms significantly increases the risk of suicide, particularly in homes where guns are not stored securely.
The firearms can be turned in anonymously, identification is not required. The firearms must be in working condition, unloaded, and transported in a bag in the trunk of a vehicle. Ammunition will be accepted, and it must be placed in a separate bag. Firearms that are turned in will be scrapped at a later date.
Being offered once again will be one $50 Big Y gift card for a handgun, rifle, or shotgun, and two $50 Big Y gift cards for an assault weapon. Organizers reserve the right to limit the number of cards an individual can receive.
This event is a partnership between the Hampden District Attorney’s Office and Baystate Health.
