Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni Names Assistant District Attorney Eduardo O. Velázquez as First Assistant

March 6, 2019 -Springfield- Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni has announced the promotion of Assistant District Attorney and Chief Trial Counsel Eduardo Velázquez to the position of First Assistant District Attorney for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office. 

District Attorney Anthony Gulluni stated, “It is with great pride I announce Eduardo’s promotion to First Assistant. As a member of this office since 2011, he has not only successfully prosecuted some of Hampden County’s toughest cases but he has been a friend and mentor to many in this office, including myself. He is a consummate professional who exemplifies the true meaning of public service.”

First Assistant Eduardo Velázquez stated, “I am deeply honored that District Attorney Gulluni has entrusted me with this position. I will continue to serve the office and the people of Hampden County with honesty, integrity, and a commitment to justice.”     

First Assistant Velázquez, a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law. He began his legal career with the Legal Service Corporation in Worcester, Mass in 1980 before founding his own firm, Perez, Velazquez & Groesbeck in 1982. In 1984 we was sworn in as a Special Assistant Attorney General where he served until 1986. He opened the Law Offices of Eduardo Velázquez in 1986 where he practiced law until he was appointed as an assistant district attorney for the Middle District (Worcester County) from 2005-2011. Eduardo joined the Hampden District Attorney’s Office in 2011 and was later elevated by District Attorney Gulluni at the start of his administration in 2015 to Chief Trial Counsel.

He joins First Assistant Jennifer Fitzgerald as D.A. Gulluni’s top administrative prosecutors overseeing all of Hampden County’s criminal prosecutions. First Assistant Fitzgerald has served in her current capacity since being appointed by D.A. Gulluni when he was first sworn into office in 2015.    

First Assistant Eduardo Velázquez has been a member of the Hampden County Bar Association, the Worcester County Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorney’s, and Volunteer Lawyers Referral Service..

He has served on the boards of the: YMCA of Central Massachusetts, Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America, Inc., Asociaión Latina Para el Progresso y Acción, Aid Center, Marathon House Advisory Board, Last Chance Group (inmate counseling group at MCI Concord), and the Southeastern Massachusetts Advocacy Center.

First Assistant Velázquez has participated in Basic Trial Advocacy Training for New Prosecutors – MDAA, Crime Watch – Great Brook Valley Housing Project, Big Brother/Big Sister, National Night Out, National Reading Program, Moot Court Competition Judge at Holy Cross, Fitchburg State University, as well as many other local schools, 150 Year Celebration of Superior Court Committee, the Massachusetts Judicial Nominating Council, and the Commission to Study Race and Ethnic Bias in the Courts.   

Eduardo is married to his wife Sandra Velázquez, has four children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
