Saugus Man Charged with Multiple Weapons Offenses

March 13, 2026 – Springfield, Massachusetts – A Saugus man and former student at Western New England University was arraigned Thursday, March 12, 2026, in Springfield District Court following an investigation involving the discovery of a firearm, and a 3D printer device, pressure cooker, and additional weapons inside a campus dormitory room.

James McNary, 18, of Saugus, was charged with using a 3D printer to manufacture a firearm, improper storage of a firearm, manufacturing an untraceable firearm, and possession of a firearm without an FID card. 

On Wednesday, March 11, Massachusetts State Police responded to Western New England University after campus officials reported that a student had been expelled for violating the university’s weapons policy.

During a protective sweep of the student’s dormitory room, Western New England University Campus Safety identified a 3D printer device and the lower frame of what appeared to be a Glock-style handgun.

State Police responded to the campus and located McNary operating a vehicle nearby. McNary was stopped and interviewed by investigators.

During the investigation, troopers learned the firearm frame discovered in the dorm room was the lower portion of a pistol. Upon further investigation, troopers seized additional weapons from the room including knives, swords, and other hand-held weaponry. Investigators also located a gas mask, night vision goggles, a pressure cooker and ball bearings.

Investigators determined McNary did not possess a License to Carry or Firearms Identification Card.

McNary was arrested by Massachusetts State Police following the investigation and later arraigned Thursday, March 12, in Springfield District Court.

At McNary’s arraignment, the Commonwealth requested bail be set at $500,000.After arguments, the court set bail at $50,000, with conditions if bail is met.

McNary’s next court date is scheduled for Monday, March 16 upon the defendants request for a bail review hearing in Superior Court.

McNary is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
