DA’s Office Secures Pretrial Detention of Three Defendants in Miller Street Drive-By Shootings

October 3, 2025 – Springfield, Massachusetts – Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni has announced that three defendants charged in connection with brazen July 5, 2025, drive-by shootings in Springfield’s Miller Street area have been ordered held without the right to bail following 58A dangerousness proceedings.

On July 5, 2025, at approximately 2 a.m., Springfield Police Officers responded to Miller Street after a ShotSpotter activation. Officers recovered 16 shell casings and located damage from gunfire across four homes and two vehicles. In one home, three young children and two adults were present when bullets pierced the residence, striking a living room couch. Several other homes sustained damage from stray bullets, with one round entering a kitchen window. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Springfield Police Department Firearms Investigation Unit detectives launched an investigation and obtained video evidence showing the suspects firing recklessly from a moving vehicle while encouraging each other to continue shooting. Detectives ultimately identified and arrested three men:

  1. Joseph Rossi, 22, of Southwick
  2. Doughlas Moss, 22, of Springfield
  3. Brennan O’Connor, 21, of Springfield

All three defendants face multiple counts, including:

  1. Firearm-Armed Assault to Murder (five counts)
  2. Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  3. Carrying a Firearm without a License
  4. Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  5. Malicious Destruction of Property over $1,200
  6. Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle

Additional firearm and narcotics charges were lodged against defendant Moss following his arrest.

Dangerousness Proceedings

  1. On July 10, 2025, Joseph Rossi was ordered held without the right to bail following his arraignment in District Court. His next court date is scheduled for November 6.
  2. On September 22, 2025, Brennan O’Connor agreed to be held without the right to bail, with his next court date scheduled for October 23.
  3. On September 23, 2025, after a full 58A dangerousness hearing, Doughlas Moss was ordered held without the right to bail. His next court date is scheduled for October 21.

Gulluni said, “These defendants showed an alarming disregard for human life when they recklessly fired into homes where children and families were present. Thanks to the swift and thorough work of the Springfield Police Department, and our successful efforts in court, all three are being held without bail. My office will continue to aggressively pursue accountability for those who bring gun violence into our neighborhoods.”
