District Attorney’s Office Continues Investigation into 1990 Homicide of Shana Renee Price Using Forensic Genealogy

August 26, 2025 – Springfield, Massachusetts – The Hampden District Attorney’s Office Unresolved and Unidentified Case Investigation Unit, alongside the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the office, engaged with community members on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Springfield Caribbean Carnival to highlight the use of forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) testing in the ongoing investigation into the 1990 homicide of 17-year-old Shana Renee Price in Blunt Park.
FIGG combines DNA analysis with genealogical research to identify distant relatives of unknown suspects, even when no match exists in CODIS, the national law enforcement DNA database. This breakthrough technology has proven to be a powerful tool in advancing unsolved cases.
Since Shana’s death, investigators have had a DNA profile connected to her homicide, but no matches have been found in law enforcement databases. In 2022, a composite sketch was released offering new insight, yet the case remains unresolved. By leveraging FIGG, investigators are hoping to uncover new leads to help bring closure to her family.
“Shana Price’s life was tragically cut short, and for more than three decades her family has lived without answers,” Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said. “Our office is determined to use every tool available, including the most cutting-edge forensic technology, to fight for justice on her behalf. With the support of the community and the advancement of science, we remain committed to pursuing the truth and ensuring accountability.”
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office continues to encourage members of the public with information about this case to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Springfield Police Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 or Text-A-Tip, Text 2-7-4-6-3-7, type SOLVE and your tip.
