Hampden District Attorney Concludes Investigation into November 2024 Shooting Death of Devin Lewis

May 16, 2025 – Springfield, Massachusetts – Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni today released the findings of his office’s investigation into the November 21, 2024, shooting death of Devin Lewis on Lyman Street in Springfield. After a comprehensive review of all available evidence – including body-worn camera footage, witness statements, 911 recordings, and autopsy results – District Attorney Gulluni has concluded that the actions taken by the two Springfield Police Officers involved were reasonable, justified, and lawful.

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting an armed, intoxicated, and suicidal male. Upon arriving, officers encountered Mr. Lewis, who exited a building holding a rifle and a handgun. Despite multiple commands from officers to drop the weapons, Mr. Lewis raised a firearm in the direction of officers and one toward the area of his own head. Two officers each discharged a single round in response to the imminent threat, and Mr. Lewis discharged his own weapon toward himself.

Mr. Lewis sustained three gunshot wounds: one projectile from an officer’s department issued rifle that struck Mr. Lewis in the right hand. A second projectile, from the department issued gun of another officer entered his upper right shoulder area. A third projectile entered directly under Mr. Lewis’s chin and exited his forehead. The wound to the head, with an entry point under the chin and an exit point at the forehead, was from Mr. Lewis’s own firearm that he himself discharged.

“This was an unfortunate and tragic situation,” said Gulluni. “However, the facts clearly show that the officers involved responded to an immediate and lethal threat with necessary and proportionate force. Their actions were consistent with their training, department policy, and the law.”

The District Attorney’s Office communicated with Mr. Lewis’s family throughout the investigation. District Attorney Gulluni and his team met with the family at the outset of the investigation and very recently, before the public release of his findings. “We are grateful for the family’s cooperation, candor, and patience during what has been an unimaginably difficult time for them,” he said. “Our deepest sympathies were extended to the family in person, and we recognize their tremendous loss.”
