Joey Sanchez and Daevon Shular Held Without Right to Bail in Home Street Homicide

January 5, 2026 – Springfield, Massachusetts – Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni has announced that Joey Sanchez, 27, of Chicopee, and Daevon Shular, 21, of Seguin, Texas, have been held without the right to bail without prejudice.

Both Sanchez and Shular are facing the same charges, including:

  • Murder
  • Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
  • Carrying a firearm without a license
  • Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
  • Attempt to commit a crime (armed robbery)

On Sunday, November 30, 2025, at approximately 10:40 p.m., officers responded to the 0-100 block of Home Street for a report of a gunshot victim.

Officers located an adult male gunshot victim inside an apartment. The victim, later identified as 27-year-old Shain West of Springfield, was transported to Baystate where he succumbed to his injuries.

The SPD Homicide Unit, under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, began investigating and identified Shular as a suspect. 

On Monday, December 1, 2025, Springfield Police Officers, under the direction of Captain Duda, arrested Shular at Baystate in connection with the shooting. Shular was privately transported to the hospital on November 30, 2025, due to a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.    

As the investigation continued, homicide detectives later identified Sanchez as a second suspect in connection with the shooting. On December 10, 2025, detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for his arrest. 

On Friday, December 12, 2025, at approximately 7 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Massachusetts State Police VFAS West and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested Sanchez on the 0-100 block of Qunicy Street in connection with the November 30, 2025, homicide.

Shular was arraigned in Springfield on December 4, 2025, and held without the right to bail. His next scheduled court date is January 6 for a pre-trial hearing.

Sanchez was arraigned in Springfield on December 15, 2025, and held without the right to bail. His next scheduled court date is February 6 for a pre-trial hearing.

This remains an ongoing investigation by the Springfield Police Department Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorneys Murder Unit.
