Juvenile Held Without Bail Following Dangerousness Hearing in Holyoke Mall Shooting

August 5, 2025 – Springfield, Massachusetts – A juvenile male, 17, of Springfield, has been ordered held without the right to bail following a dangerousness hearing held yesterday, August 4, 2025, in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at the Holyoke Mall on Friday, July 25.

During the dangerousness hearing in Springfield Juvenile Court, the defendant stipulated to dangerousness and agreed to be held without the right to bail, without prejudice. His next court date is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21, for a pretrial hearing.

The juvenile was initially arraigned virtually on Monday, July 28, 2025, following his arrest in the aftermath of the incident.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on July 25, 2025, a Holyoke Mall security officer observed an individual allegedly shoplifting and alerted Holyoke Police Officers working a detail assignment inside the mall. When officers approached the suspect near the Round One entrance, the juvenile produced a firearm. Preliminary investigation indicates that both the suspect and one officer discharged weapons. The officer was not struck; the juvenile sustained at least one gunshot wound.

Holyoke officers provided immediate medical aid, and the juvenile was transported to Baystate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. A firearm was recovered at the scene. He was placed under arrest, and was arraigned virtually on Monday, July 28, 2025, in Springfield Juvenile Court.

At the virtual arraignment, the juvenile was held without right to bail based on a dangerousness detainer. Probable cause was found, and a full hearing on dangerousness occurred yesterday.

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office intends to seek a youthful offender indictment as the investigation continues.

The incident remains under investigation by the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.
