Carlos Cuba and Khair Abdul-Raheem found guilty of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in 2020 Worthington Street stabbing

August 17, 2023 -Springfield-  On Monday August 14, 2023 a Hampden County Superior Court Jury found Carlos Cuba, 33, of West Springfield and Khair Abdul-Raheem, 34 of East Longmeadow, guilty of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and Carlos Cuba guilty of an additional charge of breaking & entering into vehicle in the daytime. The charges stemmed from a March 2020 assault on a then 22 year old male victim.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni stated, “We have no tolerance for senseless acts of violence in our community. I thank the detectives from the Springfield Police Department for their  very thorough and professional investigation, which brought these two defendants to justice. I also thank Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Schlemmer for his hard work and skilled prosecution of this case.”

On Sunday, July 26, 2020 at 6:02 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Department responded to 292 Carew Street, Mercy Medical Center, for a report of a stabbing victim. The victim stated he was involved in a physical altercation with three unknown males and that altercation occurred in the area of the  900 block of Worthington St. He further stated a unknown male stabbed him with a knife and fled.

Based on the victim’s recollection and willingness to speak with officers, investigators we able to correlate his recollection of events along with the multiple 9-1-1 calls to locate the crime scene in the 900 block of Worthington St. Investigators then were able to canvass the area and locate surveillance cameras and footage of the incident from several different vantage points.

Based on that footage, and other investigative means, investigators were able to identify both Carlos Cuba and Khair Abdul Raheem as suspects in the stabbing and place them under arrest.

While this investigation proceeded, both Carlos Cuba and Khair Abdul-Raheem were placed under arrest on Sunday, August 2nd, 2020 by the Wilbraham Police Department for their involvement in a home invasion in Wilbraham, Mass. This case is pending in Hampden Superior and scheduled for trial on August 24, 2023.

A sentencing hearing for both Carlos Cuba and Khair Abdul-Raheem is scheduled for Friday, August 18, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. in Hampden Superior Court.

Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Schlemmer successfully represented the Commonwealth at trial.
