James Carmenatty arrested in connection with Holyoke homicide

May 24, 2023 -Holyoke- James Carmenatty, 34, of Holyoke has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Jasell Camacho. He was arrested, taken into custody, and transported to the Holyoke Police Department on May 19, 2023. He was arraigned in Holyoke District Court the same day and is currently held without the right to bail, with his next scheduled court date on June 15, 2023.

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 1:32 a.m., the Holyoke Police Department received a ShotSpotter activation indicating shots fired in the area of the 100 block of Lyman Street. Officers arrived a short time later and located Mr. Camacho lying on the sidewalk at the corner of High Street and Lyman Street, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services were performed on scene but were unsuccessful as he was pronounced deceased.  

Shortly after police were alerted to the shooting another individual, later identified as James Carmenatty, was privately transported to Holyoke Medical Center and was treated for a gunshot wound.

In the days after the incident detectives developed probable cause and were able to obtain an arrest warrant for James Carmenatty, on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 charging him with murder.

The victim has been previously identified as Mr. Jasell Camacho, 27, of Chicopee.

This incident is under investigation by the Holyoke Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit.
