Suspect arraigned in fatal Chicopee accident

October 11, 2022 -Chicopee- On October 8, 2022 the Chicopee Police Department responded to the 400 block of Springfield Street in Chicopee for a report of pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle.

When officers arrived they discovered a male victim who was already deceased.

The deceased has been identified as Mr. Nickolas Weichel, 34, of Chicopee.

Mr. Weichel appears to have been walking to his car when he was struck by a motor vehicle operating in the wrong lane, and at speeds exceeding 70 mph, the posted speed limit on this road is 30 mph.

Arrested in connection with this fatal crash in Mr. Nazier Grandison, 22, of Springfield.

Mr. Grandison was arraigned this morning in Chicopee District Court. His bail has been set at $10,000 and his next scheduled court date is on 1/10/ 2023. He was been charged with: motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, and leaving the scene of personal injury or death, Speeding at a rate greater than was reasonable or proper, marked lanes violation.  

This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni offers his sympathies to Mr. Weichel’s family.
