Suspect under arrest in Chicopee fatal shooting

June 27, 2022 -Chicopee- On Saturday, June 25, 2022 at approximately 3:56 p.m., the Chicopee Police Department responded to the 600 block of Chicopee Street for a report of shots fired.  On scene, responding officers located an adult male who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical procedures were performed on scene until the victim could be transported to Baystate Medical Center. He was declared deceased a short time later.

The victim has been identified as Mr. Anderson Martinez, 42, of Holyoke

Officers located Angel Guzman, 47, of Chicopee, in front of a nearby apartment complex, and in possession of a semi-automatic handgun. Guzman, who is partially confined to a wheelchair complied with officers in relinquishing the firearm. He was secured by officers and transported to the Chicopee Police Department. He was arrested and charged with Voluntary manslaughter, and Assault by means of a dangerous weapon.

It appears both men were engaged in an argument,  with both men brandishing a weapon before shots were fired.

This is an on-going investigation being conducted by the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit.

Angel Guzman was arraigned today in Chicopee District Court and held on $100,000 cash bail with the condition on reporting to probation once a week if released. His next scheduled court date is on July 27, 2022.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni offers his sympathies to Mr. Martinez’s family.
