Almando Diaz arrested on murder charge in connection with Chicopee homicide

November 10, 2021 -Springfield- On Wednesday, March 11, 2021, at approximately 11:52 p.m., members of the Chicopee Police Department responded to calls of possible shots fired in the vicinity of Springfield Street and Walton Street in the City of Chicopee.

A short time later, the Springfield Police Department responded to the area of Springfield Street and Cunningham Street, in Springfield, for a single vehicle crash. Officers located a male individual, later identified as Mr. Luis Ramos, 32, of Springfield, who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.

Later on in the morning of March 12, 2021, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Mr. Ramos’s death to be a homicide.  Over the course of the next eight months, Investigators conducted an intensive investigation, including applying for and being granted eleven search warrants and utilizing numerous investigative techniques. As a result, investigators were able to successfully obtain an arrest warrant on Monday, November 8, 2021, for Almando Diaz, 39, of Springfield.

On Monday, November 8, 2021, members of the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni’s SAFE Unit, Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, and the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and Chicopee Police Department located the suspect, Almando Diaz, and placed him under arrest and charged him with first degree murder.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni stated, “Over eight months, detectives from the Massachusetts State Police in my office and Chicopee Police relentlessly sought evidence to solve and prove this murder. I express my thanks for their extraordinary work that led to this arrest. We will now work within the court system to secure justice for the victim and his loved ones.”       

Diaz was arraigned yesterday in Chicopee District Court and is currently being held without the right to bail. His next scheduled court date is on December 6, 2021.
