Victim Identified in Fatal I-91 Crash

November 17, 2016 -Springfield, Ma- Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni’s office today identified the victim of a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on November 11, 2016 on I-91 in Springfield, Ma.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. today the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Springfield was notified that Connecticut State Police had pursued a car whose operator refused to stop for them on Route 91 northbound. That vehicle was being operated at an extremely high rate of speed. Connecticut State Police terminated their pursuit at the state line.

A description of the suspect vehicle from the Connecticut pursuit was broadcast to Massachusetts State Police patrols. As the description was being put out, a Massachusetts trooper conducting speed enforcement on Route 91 northbound in Longmeadow observed a car matching that description being operated at an extremely high rate of speed. The trooper tried to stop the suspect vehicle, which was estimated to be traveling at 100 mph, but the operator refused to stop.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the vehicle continued to flee at an extremely high rate of speed as it approached Exit 2 in Springfield. While attempting to take the exit ramp at the high speed the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

The operator and lone occupant, John A. Font-Rodriguez, 26, of New Britain, Ct, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

This is an on-going investigation by the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of police in Connecticut.
